SZA has revealed that she is currently “going through a breakup” and claimed that her ex-fiancé “hates” her.
While appearing as a guest on the latest episode of First We Feast’s Hot Ones with host Sean Evans, the ‘Kill Bill’ singer appeared dressed as an insect – complete with a pair of prosthetic antennae and massive bug eyes – and opened up about the current state of her personal life.
Speaking about her choice of appearance, SZA said: “I’m just tired of being not a bug.” Elsewhere in the interview, the singer revealed which song makes her most emotional to perform. “‘Nobody Gets Me’ because my ex-fiancé hates me so much, and it’s so unfortunate. Every time I sing it, it’s like, ‘Damn, what the fuck?’” she told Evans.
She went on to add that she also gets emotional while performing ‘Normal Girl’, ’20 Something’ and ‘Drew Barrymore’ from her 2017 debut LP ‘Ctrl’ because they remind her of seeing “the boy you like … fucking on some other girl at a house party.”
SZA previously opened up about how her ex-fiancé served as inspiration for her song ‘Nobody Gets Me’. In an interview with Hot 97 back in 2022, the singer shared: “This particular song in entirety is a story about my ex-fiancé and how we went through all these arguments, and we broke up. I just felt like I was gonna be doomed to be in hell for the rest of my life because nobody understood me the way he did, and nobody motivated me the way he did.”
Elsewhere in the chat with Evans, the singer revealed that she finds the music industry to be confusing due to it’s unpredictable nature. “I never know what’s happening. I be like, ‘I thought you liked this.’ Then they’re like, ‘No, stupid, we hate this,’” she said.
She continued: “It’s abusive, but it’s also very fulfilling and validating. The toxic [relationships] are the most fun.”
At the end of the interview, Evans gave SZA a chance to plug anything she’s currently got going on in her life to which she said: “I’m going through a breakup, it’s hot as fuck.”
Many fans think the interview and the singer’s choice of insect prosthetics may be her teasing her forthcoming album ‘Lana‘ which will serve as the follow-up to her 2022 album ‘SOS‘. Back in February, she released the track ‘Saturn’ which is allegedly the lead single of ‘Lana’. She also shared an Instagram post back in June dressed in a different insect cosplay which was soundtracked by the unreleased track ‘Storytime’.
Previously, SZA headlined this year’s edition of Glastonbury. In a four-star review of her set, NME shared: “As disjointed as this show occasionally is, though, it’s hypnotic and potent. The turnout is noticeably small for a headliner, but the extra space on the ground allows young women to share smiles of recognition and understanding with strangers while singing along to songs centred on overcoming toxic romances and self-esteem battles.
“‘This is for my day ones only,’ SZA exclaims as she introduces closer ‘20 Something’ to screams from the front section of the crowd. In the moment, their unwavering devotion is clearly the only response that matters.”
In other news, the singer confirmed that she’s taking a break from performing live “for a while”.
