Tate McRae addresses MAGA speculation: ‘It’s pretty obvious what kind of person I am’

Tate McRae has addressed speculation about her political beliefs.

Last year, rumours circulated online suggesting the Canadian pop star supported U.S. President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” political slogan and ideologies because she featured on country singer Morgan Wallen’s song, What I Want. The Last Night musician has never publicly endorsed the American leader.

The speculation intensified again when Tate was linked to NHL player Jack Hughes, who faced backlash in February when he was filmed laughing – along with his teammates – at one of Trump’s jokes amid a White House event.

But in an interview for Variety published on Monday, Tate insisted it is “pretty obvious” where her support lies.

“I like to say my piece through organisations I support and the environment that I have on tour,” she said. “I think it’s pretty obvious what kind of person I am and the things I support. And I hope that my fans can see that through the things that I’m putting my energy towards.”

In 2025, Tate started selling a grey “Little Miss Possessive” hoodie on her website, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting The Trevor Project – a suicide prevention and mental health organisation for LGBTQ+ young people.

And as for her relationship with New Jersey Devils sportsman Jack, the Tear Myself Apart hitmaker declined to comment.

“I try to keep my relationships as sacred and private as possible,” the 23-year-old continued. “I love the people in my life. They love me. You just try to keep that circle as positive and supportive as possible. And the outside noise, I can’t do anything about that. Focusing my energy on something that I can’t control, it just puts me in a bad mood.”

Tate is currently working on her fourth studio album, a follow-up to 2025’s So Close to What. Accordingly, the Greedy star promised fans that the new project will be her best work yet.

“There’s always thought about how you want your legacy to go down,” she added. “For me, the way to do that is try to beat your last performance, try to beat your last song, try to grow, evolve, pick it apart, rip it apart, figure out what didn’t work, what I didn’t like about that performance, what I could have done better, why I was nervous, figure out how to not be nervous. I think the more you can master yourself and your performances, the better you get.”
