Taylor Swift makes history at 2026 Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony

Taylor Swift made history at the 2026 Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Thursday night.

During the gala held in New York City, the Opalite hitmaker was inducted into the prestigious institution.

Taylor, 36, is the youngest female artist to receive the honour, with Stevie Wonder remaining the youngest-ever artist to be included overall, with the music legend having been inducted at the age of 32 in 1983.

Taking to the stage for her acceptance speech, Taylor reflected on the ups and downs of her 23-year career in the entertainment industry and declared that songwriting was often the “easiest thing”. The pop star released her debut single, Tim McGraw, in June 2006.

“Not because it didn’t take effort – definitely did – not that it wasn’t frustrating at times – because it could be – and not that my songwriting didn’t haunt me relentlessly until I cracked the perfect internal rhyme scheme for the third line, the second verse of the hook, where my teachers called me out in class without paying attention – because that definitely happened,” she told the crowd, according to Variety.

In addition, Taylor became emotional when thanking her parents and brother Austin Swift for uprooting their lives and helping her pursue her dreams when she was a teenager.

“(It) couldn’t have been easy for my parents and brother to pick up and move our entire family from Pennsylvania to relocate to Nashville, so that I could hone my craft in the songwriting capital of the world,” the Shake It Off singer continued. “Even though words are supposed to kind of be my thing, I will never be able to express my gratitude to you guys for doing that for me.”

Earlier in the prizegiving, Taylor was joined by singer-songwriter Sombr for renditions of her 2020 song Cardigan and 2010 track Dear John.

A songwriter with a catalogue of notable songs qualifies for induction 20 years after their first significant commercial release of a track.

Other artists to make the class of 2026 included Alanis Morissette, KISS stars Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, Kenny Loggins, Christopher ‘Tricky’ Stewart, Terry Britten and Graham Lyle, as well as Walter Afanasieff.

Previously, officials from the Songwriters Hall of Fame presented Taylor with the Hal David Starlight Award in 2010.

RAYE was the 2026 recipient of the prize, which honours young songwriters who are “making a significant impact in the music industry via their original songs”.
