Fans of The Maccabees have been given a significant glimmer of hope regarding the band’s future. Appearing as a guest co-host on The Evening Show with Dan O’Connell on Radio X last night, guitarist Felix White addressed the burning question of whether the indie icons would ever return to the studio.

While the band’s recent live comeback leaned heavily on their celebrated legacy, White admitted that any future steps must look forward rather than backward.

During the broadcast, which served as the official lineup reveal for Brighton’s On The Beach festival, Dan O’Connell pressed White on the possibility of new music following their successful run of reunion shows.

“It’s not a no at the moment,” White revealed. “What happened was last year we thought, if we love it enough, let’s see where we’re at. And we did love it enough.”

However, White was quick to clarify that the band isn’t interested in simply coasting on nostalgia. “We all felt like, ‘Do you know what? If we’re going to do that again, it can’t always be a nostalgic thing.’ Nothing’s been done—there are ideas, we haven’t been in a room together doing it—but it’s not a write-off.”

The Maccabees’ four-album run remains one of the most respected discographies in British indie-rock, a fact White is acutely aware of. He emphasized that the bar for a fifth record is incredibly high.

“If there is another Maccabees record, it’s going to have to be the best Maccabees record,” White insisted. “We can’t just rustle it up for you in a few months… it will take a minute, but we’re thinking about it.”

For fans, the confirmation that the band is actively “thinking about it” marks a major shift from their 2017 split. While there is no release date on the horizon, the door to the studio is officially ajar.

Tune into The Evening Show with Dan O’Connell on Radio X weekdays from 7:00pm – 10:00pm and on Global Player.
