‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ is heading to the Las Vegas Sphere

The Rocky Horror Picture Show will be adapted and shown at the Las Vegas Sphere in 2027.

The 1976 cult classic will be the latest movie to get regular screenings at the 20,000 capacity venue, following on from The Wizard Of Oz becoming the first to be adapted to fit the 160,000-square-foot screen, and already bringing in around $400million (£298million) in ticket sales (via Consequence).

Set to start showing from next year, Sphere Entertainment will use “advanced technologies” to increase the quality and size of the original film, so it looks right on the Sphere’s curved interior display.

“Through Sphere Studios, we are building a slate of original experiences that push the boundaries of technology and storytelling for this new medium, while always keeping the audience at the centre of the experience,” said Sphere Entertainment CEO James Dolan.

“Since The Rocky Horror Picture Show premiered in 1975, it redefined audience participation and became a cultural phenomenon. With Sphere, we have the opportunity to take that spirit of immersion to an entirely new level.”

The launch will make the Sphere the latest venue to regularly show the Richard O’Brien film, which stars Susan Sarandon and Tim Curry. It is not yet clear when the opening night will be, nor how long the showings will run for.

The groundbreaking venue opened in 2023, cost $2.3billion (£1.7billion) to make, and features an exosphere with over 1.2million puck-sized LEDs that transmit images across the Las Vegas skyline.

U2 were the first to perform at the venue, kicking things off a residency that ran between September 2023 and March 2024.

Reviewing the band’s opening night, NME praised the show for “taking the live concert experience ‘to the next level’” and delivering “a fine balancing act of doing just that while also ensuring their music remains very much at the forefront”.

Since then, Phish, Dead & Company, the Eagles and the Backstreet Boys have all played residencies there, and No Doubt recently closed out their run of reunion shows by bringing out Olivia Rodrigo as a special guest.

Metallica confirmed a residency at the venue earlier this year, after hinting that they were close to signing a deal with organisers. Those shows are set to begin later this year, and will follow the same ‘No Repeat Weekend’ tradition that began with their ‘M72 World Tour’ – where no songs are repeated on each Thursday and Saturday throughout the residency.

There have also been some reports that Tool are in talks for a Sphere residency too, but nothing has been confirmed at time of writing.
