The Wanted‘s Max George has shared he had a pacemaker fitted, days after saying he’d need surgery for a heart condition.
The musician posted a photo of his scar where the device has been fitted and told fans that he was taken to hospital to undergo emergency surgery.
“Operation took around 2 and half hours,” the post said. “The main issue being some of my veins had collapsed where the wires were meant to go… But the surgeons and nurses at the NHS have been incredible. I owe everything to them.”
He continued: “Time to rest and then tackle life full on once again. Thank you for all your support. It’s meant a hell of a lot to myself and my family.”
Earlier this month, George revealed that he had been hospitalised after some tests revealed “issues” with his heart. At the time, he shared a photo of himself lying in a hospital bed while giving a thumbs up and explained that he had been admitted after “feeling really unwell” and having some tests done.
The 36-year-old said he had “a 2:1 block” in his heart, which is where the heart beats slower or more irregularly than it should be.
Previously, George said in a video to his Instagram stories that he was “hoping (for a) pacemaker”. The device is a small, battery-powered machine that is usually implanted into the chest or abdomen, designed to help control an irregular or slow heart rate.
George’s pacemaker is placed under a tattoo that reads ‘04.08.1988’, the birthdate of his former bandmate Tom Parker, who passed away in March 2022 at the age of 33 after battling brain cancer.
The Wanted rose to fame in early 2010 and are widely known for their chart-topping single ‘Glad You Came’. After a hiatus in 2014, the band came back in 2022 in the form of a duo rather than a 5-piece, comprising this time only George and bandmate Siva Kaneswaran.
