The Wildhearts’ icon Ginger shares cancer diagnosis: “Strength and positivity will prevail and the show will go on”

The Wildhearts frontman Ginger has been diagnosed with cancer.

The Newcastle band’s team shared a statement on social media yesterday (Monday March 16). It confirmed that singer and guitarist, 61, is living with Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) – a rare but aggressive strain of cancer.

“During The Wildhearts’ incredible ‘More Satanic Rites’ UK tour in December 2025, frontman and founding member Ginger Wildheart was experiencing severe pains that some nights forced him to take some short breaks from stage,” the message began.

“Determined not to upset the band’s loyal fans – new and old – Ginger took painkillers to ensure the rock ‘n’ roll was delivered, without missing a riff.”

The post went on to state that the frontman subsequently underwent “medical tests and investigations to establish the cause of the ongoing issue”.

“The results have been confirmed and we are saddened to report that Ginger has been diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) – a rare but aggressive strain of cancer,” it continued.

However, The Wildhearts’ UK headline tour for this spring is set to go ahead as planned. More dates will be announced in the coming months, according to the post.

The statement told fans that Ginger was currently “in fine fettle, continuing to write songs that will be released under the guise of The Wildhearts and as solo projects in the future”.

“While we process this news and await further medical advice, Ginger wants everyone to know that strength and positivity will prevail and the show WILL go on,” the message read.

“Make sure you come and see The Wildhearts – sounding bigger and more refreshingly amazing than ever at a venue near you soon.”

The Wildhearts were at work on the follow-up to their 2025 album ‘Satanic Rites Of The Wildhearts’, which is “currently being finalised with announcements to follow later this year”.

Find any remaining tickets for The Wildhearts’ tour here, and see the full schedule below.

The Wildhearts’ UK tour dates for this year are:

APRIL:
02 – Hangar 34, Liverpool
03 – Takedown Festival, Portsmouth
04 – Town Hall, Trowbridge
05 – Signature Brew Haggerston, London

MAY:
27 – The Social, Hull
28 – The Lemon Tree, Aberdeen
29 – Beat Generator Live, Dundee
30 – Tolbooth, Stirling
31 – La Belle Angele, Edinburgh

In 2017, Ginger was hospitalised amid issues with his mental health, and has spoken about struggles with depression in the past.

Former Wildhearts member Scott Sorry was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2017. He died last October, aged 47.
