Traffic co-founder Dave Mason dies

Traffic co-founder Dave Mason has died at the age of 79.

In a statement released on Tuesday, a representative announced with “deep and profound sadness” that the English singer-songwriter and guitarist had passed away over the weekend.

“On Sunday, April 19, after cooking an amazing dinner with his beloved wife Winifred, he sat down to take a nap with sweet Star (the maltese) at his feet,” they wrote. “He passed away peacefully, in his favorite chair, surrounded by the beautiful Carson Valley (in Nevada) that he loved so much. A storybook ending. On his own terms. Which is how he lived his life right up until the end.”

The spokesperson went on to thank fans for their support.

“He leaves a lasting imprint on the soundtrack of our lives and the hearts he has lifted. His legacy will be cherished forever,” they added.

A cause of death wasn’t disclosed.

Born in Worcester, England in 1946, Mason rose to prominence as an original member of the rock band, Traffic.

He wrote and sang lead vocals on the group’s biggest hits, including Feelin’ Alright? and Hole in My Shoe.

However, the musician had a complicated history with Traffic, having departed after the release of the band’s debut album, Mr Fantasy, in 1967, only to rejoin for their self-titled follow-up in 1968, and then leave again.

Later, Mason collaborated with many other artists, including George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac, and the Rolling Stones.

In addition, he penned the song Only You Know and I Know for Delaney & Bonnie and was known for his 1977 solo hit, We Just Disagree.

Back in 2025, Mason announced that he was cancelling his concert dates due to “ongoing health challenges”, and that he was retiring from touring.

He is survived by his wife, Winifred Wilson, and daughter, Danielle.
