Tyla gets “so genuinely excited” when other artists want to collaborate with her.
The 22-year-old South African hitmaker shot to fame in 2023 with the release of her chart-topping hit Water, for which she won her first Grammy, in the inaugural Best African Music Performance category.
In a new cover story with Elle magazine, Tyla revealed she had no intention of releasing a remix of Water until rapper Travis Scott approached her.
“Initially we weren’t going to have a remix, but after Travis asked, I was like, ‘Duh,'” the singer said. “Whenever I get people mentioning that they want to collab, and it’s people that I’ve listened to all my life and been a fan of… I get so genuinely excited. It’s like, ‘Yes – like, yes, yes, yes.'”
A remix of the song was released in November 2023.
In the past year, Tyla has also collaborated with the likes of Becky G, Tems and Kelvin Momo.
Elsewhere in the interview, the Getting Late singer shared that she sends her music to her family’s group chat before releasing it anywhere.
She also revealed that her parents watched her win her first Grammy earlier this year, telling the outlet, “They came backstage after I won; my mom was crying. Because it’s so surreal.”
Earlier this month, Tyla won the Best Afrobeats Video for Water at the MTV Video Music Awards in New York.
