Usher & His Sons Ask Each Other Who They Would Message If They Could Reach Out to Anybody: ‘You’re Not DMing Beyoncé?’

Usher & His Sons Ask Each Other Who They Would Message If They Could Reach Out to Anybody: ‘You’re Not DMing Beyoncé?’

Usher and his teenage sons, Cinco and Naviyd, kick off the launch of Instagram’s new Carversations series, as episode one arrived on Thursday (Dec. 11).

Inspired by the theory that kids open up to their parents for difficult talks when they don’t need to look each other in the eye, Usher and the kids — whom he shares with ex-wife Tameka Foster — take a cruise and get candid about navigating social media, and even test out their vocals in the car.

Usher vented about how he wished Instagram was around when he was looking to get signed, as he felt that it would have bypassed gatekeeping and not had him yearning for the approval of record labels.

“I used to literally sit in the car, he recalled. “Just like this. And I had to wait for people to come out of a nightclub and then sing for them in order for them to recognize my talent and hopefully wanna sign me as an artist.”

The R&B legend continued: “Y’all got Instagram so you don’t need to go to a record company or newspaper, or some place that has a group of people congregated to say, ‘I need to get your approval in order to be an artist.’ Imagine the creative world that we would’ve had, if we had the access that you have.”

Naviyd, 17, joked that his dad’s from the “Ice Age” and revealed if he could DM anyone, it would be to get some Kaytranada. “You’re not DMing Beyoncé?” 18-year-old Cinco quips from the backseat. (They don’t bring it up, but Naviyd went viral for DMing PinkPantheress from his father’s IG account, which led to them linking up at one of the British artist’s shows.)

While Usher — who also has daughter Sovereign and son Sire with wife Jenn Goicoechea — didn’t give a specific name of an artist or potential collaborator, he explained he would’ve been using IG to build a creative community.

“Anybody that I wanted to collaborate with that was an artist, creative people who were doing things similar to what I wanted to accomplish because collaboration is so important,” Usher said.

Talent runs deep in the Raymond bloodline. Cinco kicked a freestyle in the backseat before — after some prying from Usher — Naviyd revealed the mellifluous pipes of his own. Of course, Usher had to show the kids how it’s done, performing a portion of his 2001 “U Don’t Have to Call” hit from the driver’s seat.
