Wade Bowen Is Texas Music

When Wade Bowen walked into Sean McConnell’s studio in 2020, he was struggling. The previous year had tested him personally and professionally in ways he had never experienced in his 20-year career. Chronic vocal cord issues, and a subsequent surgery, forced him to cancel a long stretch of shows, including a European tour. He was grieving the 2018 death by suicide of his nephew and member of his touring crew, Chase Cavender. In the wake, the album he made with McConnell turned out raw, unpolished, and heavy. The pandemic compounded matters. “The timing just wasn’t right for it,” Bowen recalls now. As soon as he and McConnell finished the record, they shelved the whole thing.

Since then, Bowen released two studio albums — most recently, Flyin’ in 2024 — plus his second collaboration LP with Randy Rogers, Hold My Beer, Vol. 2. The New Braunfels, Texas, resident kept a frenetic touring schedule, headlining major Texas venues and mid-sized dance halls around the country, with occasional arena or amphitheater stops opening for Koe Wetzel thrown in. Then, in 2025, five years after he recorded that album with McConnell, Bowen gave it a fresh listen.

“When I revisited it, I went, ‘Dang, this record’s better than I remember,’” Bowen tells Rolling Stone.

McConnell gave the LP a fresh mix and — six years after it was recorded — Bowen dropped The Version of Me You Get in September. In the moment, it was an open diary as Bowen navigated his foggy headspace, but in hindsight, the 10-track album is a portrait of a songwriter pushing his lyrical and musical boundaries.

“I love this record so much, because it’s as vulnerable and raw and intimate as I have ever been,” Bowen says. “I didn’t really mean for it to be that way.”

Since getting his start in 1998, Bowen ascended to the pinnacle of the Texas country scene with a mix of love songs like “Who I Am” and two-step numbers like “Saturday Night,” but his catalog has always been country, and often honky-tonk country. The Version of Me You Get, however, puts an undeniable rock edge on Bowen’s gravelly Texas drawl. The opening line of “Rain,” the first track — “That was one hell of a storm. Almost didn’t make it, wish to God that I was warned” — lays bare the angst that gave rise to the record.

Editor’s picks

The title track showcases piano while Bowen laments the friends and family who stood by him throughout his career. On “Turpentine,” he asks for a drink stronger than most bars can pour. And the haunting “Weight on the Levee” is a collaboration with Dan Tyminski, whose version of “Man of Constant Sorrow” was used in the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou?. Tyminski and McConnell had written “Weight on the Levee,” and it was McConnell who suggested bringing the bluegrass artist on board.

“It seemed to me like a no-brainer,” Bowen says. “How can you go wrong with the man of constant sorrow singing with you on a song that he wrote?”

In November, Bowen will find himself on a double-album cycle. His 2006 album Lost Hotel — which established Bowen as one of the biggest acts in Texas at the time — will hit its 20-year anniversary, and Bowen will celebrate it with a deluxe version featuring unreleased studio tracks, live cuts, and demos.

“I don’t know if it’s my favorite, because that’s hard to say, but it’s the one that I’m most proud of,” Bowen says of Lost Hotel. “I was trying really hard at that time to prove myself as a songwriter to my peers, trying to open shows and trying to prove to people that I could do this. It was a stick-my-head-above-the-crowd kind of record, and those are always important in artists’ careers.”

The career Bowen ultimately carved out for himself is one that most artists never attain. He had McConnell and the late Keith Gattis produce some of his biggest records. Wetzel cites him as an influence. He and Rogers still tour together frequently, and he was part of the 2025 Cross Canadian Ragweed reunion tour, opening a sold-out show at McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas, that August. In November, he’ll headline the intimate Hill Country Reserve festival in Fredricksburg, Texas. He also produced the comeback EP that Bleu Edmondson dropped last year. Now 47, Bowen says that legacy is what drives him. He knows he’ll likely never have a chart-topping hit or headline arenas, but what he has found instead is art he is happy to pursue and content to keep making.

“I’ve established a good career and that I can do this as long as I want,” he says. “That’s success in its own right. I lean on that.”
