Watch Coldplay play ‘Speed Of Sound’ in full as band for the first time since 2016

Coldplay have performed ‘Speed Of Sound’ in full for the first time as a band since 2016 – watch the moment below.

The British band are currently midway through the North American leg of their ‘Music Of The Spheres’ tour, which officially kicked off earlier this May – visit here for tickets.

Stopping by El Paso, Texas on June 14, Coldplay whipped out a special performance of ‘Speed Of Sound’. The song was released as the lead single from their 2005 album ‘X&Y‘, becoming their first download Number One and their first Top 10 hit in America.

However, frontman Chris Martin has expressed his reluctance to play it live, admitting that “we never got it right”. Though the song has been performed acoustically or partially, last night’s performance in El Paso is the first time the band have fully played the song in nearly a decade.

Martin told the crowd that the band asked themselves while in El Paso: “Why don’t we try and reclaim the song ‘Speed of Sound’? At some point, we’ll do a proper edit of the song”. He added that he wanted to make the song “a little bit quicker, a little bit shorter, a little bit tighter”, and then proceeded to perform the song with the band.

Watch Coldplay perform ‘Speed of Sound’ below:

Coldplay will be playing a series of huge stadium shows in August this year, where they will take up residency at Hull’s Craven Park Stadium and London’s Wembley Stadium.

It’s the continuation of their record-breaking ‘Music Of The Spheres’ tour, which recently became the biggest rock tour of all time by grossing $945.7million and selling 8.8million tickets since it began in March 2022. The shows have also been praised for “setting a new standard” when it comes to an eco-conscious approach to live music.

Additionally, 10 per cent of the band’s proceeds from the shows will be donated to the Music Venue Trust – helping to keep UK grassroots music venues open and fighting for the survival and development of upcoming artists.

Elsewhere, we spoke to Chris Martin in an exclusive interview last year about their 10th album ‘Moon Music‘.

He updated us about the band’s previous plans to retire from music after 12 albums. Martin affirmed to us that “it is 12 albums for sure, but we’re going to be a bit later than that. There’s one more thing, which is a musical. [That’s] album number 11, but that might have to come out after album 12 because of how long musicals take to animate.”

“Our last single is on this album, and that’s called ‘All My Love’. That’s the last ‘single’ single,” he continued. “We have the musical thing, then an album just called ‘Coldplay’, which is the final one. I think that will be a year late – I know it will be.”
