The music world was dealt a devastating blow today when word came down that Dolly Parton has died at age 80 following a few years of health setbacks that she kept very private.
“Sadness lies with us, not with Dolly,” Bryan Seaver, her nephew, said in a video statement announcing the tragic news. “Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by [her late husband] Carl, her parents, and countless others who have watched her and longed for her to meet them in the heavens.”
Live concerts were only a small part of Parton’s incredible career, which included nearly 50 albums, film roles, soundtracks, Broadway musicals, philanthropy, and her theme park, Dollywood. But she started gigging around the time of her 1967 debut LP, Hello, I’m Dolly, and hit the road regularly throughout the next five decades.
When Parton turned 70 in 2016, she decided to stop traditional touring at the conclusion of her Pure & Simple run. The 67-date tour was a monumental undertaking that took her all across North America, and featured two extended sets that spotlighted nearly all of the key songs she wrote and sang, including “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “Islands in the Stream,” “9 to 5,” and “I Will Always Love You.”
Her live shows in the years that followed were limited to appearances at special events, most notably her 2022 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — an honor she initially balked at since she didn’t see herself as a rock musician — where she played her new song “Rockin’ It” and “Jolene,” sharing the stage with members of Duran Duran and Judas Priest, along with Zac Brown, Sheryl Crow, Pat Benatar, and Pink.
On March 14, 2025, just 11 days after losing Carl Dean, her husband of nearly 60 years, Parton appeared at the opening day of Dollywood’s 40th anniversary year. Everyone would have understood if she remained home to mourn, but Parton somehow found the fortitude to not only interact with the crowd, but also get onstage and sing her 2010 song “Celebrate the Dreamer in You,” which she wrote for Dollywood’s 25th anniversary.
She performed the song completely by herself on acoustic guitar, and we’re very fortunate that at least one fan captured it on their phone. It was her final time performing in public.
“Celebrate the Dreamer In You” is far from Parton’s most famous composition, but it was perfect for the occasion. “Let nobody block your path,” she sang. “Allow nothing to distract/The passion and desire inside your heart/There is nothin’ you can’t do/There’s no dream that can’t come true/With faith and love and trust enough to start.”
