Watch ex-Dead Kennedys legend Jello Biafra return to the stage just months after suffering a stroke

Former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra has returned to the stage just months after suffering a stroke.

The punk icon, real name Raymond Pepperell, made a surprise appearance at TentacleFest in San Francisco on June 27, joining Wheelchair Sports Camp onstage for a performance of their collaboration ‘Make It Make Sense’.

Footage shared by Alternative Tentacles, the independent label Biafra founded in 1979, showed Biafra returning to the stage for the first time since suffering a stroke in March.

“Not only was TentacleFest an amazing show, it also featured the return of Jello Biafra to the stage,” the label wrote alongside the clip. “Check out this clip of Jello coming out to sing ‘Make It Make Sense’ with Wheelchair Sports Camp!”

The appearance came just months after Biafra was taken to hospital after suffering a haemorrhagic stroke caused by high blood pressure.

At the time, Alternative Tentacles said the 67-year-old was in a stable condition, while Biafra later explained that he had collapsed after getting out of bed.

“I hopped out of my bed because I needed to pee, and my left leg just collapsed under me and I fell to the floor,” he said.

A later update from his family said his speech had “mostly come back in full” and that “cognitively, it’s like the stroke never happened”, although the left side of his body remained weak.

However, Alternative Tentacles has since urged fans not to read too much into the TentacleFest appearance, explaining that Biafra was only onstage for around 10 minutes and was “visibly exhausted and pale” by the end of the event.

“He still has a long way to go in his recovery,” the label added.

Biafra’s return nevertheless marks an encouraging milestone for the influential punk pioneer, who fronted Dead Kennedys from 1978 until the band split in 1986 before embarking on a long career spanning spoken-word performances, collaborations and Alternative Tentacles.

Dead Kennedys accused Biafra of withholding royalties in a lawsuit in 1998. Biafra lost the legal battle two years later, and was required to pay his ex-bandmates outstanding royalties and punitive damages.

Additionally, he was also forced to hand over the rights to the majority of Dead Kennedys’ back catalogue. This allowed the remaining members to reissue past albums, including a 2022 re-release of their debut record ‘Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables’. According to Biafra, this was done “intentionally” behind his back.

Last year, Biafra joined King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard onstage for a performance of the Dead Kennedys classic ‘Police Truck’ during the Australian psych-rock band’s residency at Forest Hills Stadium in New York.
