Last night, Olivia Rodrigo hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time, playing double duty as musical guest. With a little luck on her side courtesy of last week’s musical guest Jack White, Rodrigo ; played “Drop Dead,” the lead single off her forthcoming album You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So in Love; and performed her new song “Begged,” which she debuted late last month at an invite-only show in LA, with Weyes Blood. Watch it all go down below.
During her monologue, Rodrigo shared footage from her earliest acting job, an Old Navy commercial at age six, and performed a parody of “Driver’s License” about the begrudging process of getting a Real I.D. Throughout the episode, she appeared as a recently jilted girlfriend trying to make her ex a little jealous; an amateur baker whose bundt cake looks suspiciously like an anus; and a soap opera character with a penchant for pushing her foes down many, many stairs. Rodrigo also performed a song about living in a perfect bedroom in a zoo on a bug people planet, in a short produced by Dan Bulla.
Beyond Weyes Blood, Rodrigo’s guest list included Heated Rivalry star Connor Storrie, who introduced her performance of “Begged,” and Debbie Harry, who did the honors ahead of “Drop Dead.” Aziz Ansari also made a guest appearance on the episode, playing FBI Director Kash Patel.
Rodrigo most recently appeared on SNL in 2023, where she sang “Vampire” and “All-American Bitch” ahead of the release of her second album, Guts. She’s the third artist to both host and perform on SNL’s 51st season thus far, following Harry Styles and Sabrina Carpenter.
You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So in Love is due out on June 12. On Thursday, she announced the Unraveled Tour, a run in support of the album that will feature four-night residencies in London, New York, and Los Angeles. On select dates, she’ll have openers including Grace Ives, the Last Dinner Party, and Wolf Alice.
