Göransson co-wrote the blues-inspired song with director, Ryan Coogler, for Caton to perform in the film

Raphael Saadiq, actor Miles Caton, and producer Ludwig Göransson joined forces on Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform “I Lied to You,” a song from Ryan Coogler‘s acclaimed film Sinners.

The trio showcased the blues track, performed by Caton in the movie, alongside a group of back-up singers. They opted for a stripped back production on stage, instead focusing on the song itself for the impressive rendition.

Caton stars as Samuel “Sammie” Moore, an aspiring blues singer, in Coogler’s Southern horror flick, set in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta. Göransson composed the film’s score and developed its soundtrack, which feature several original numbers and performances from other cast members like Jack O’Connell and Lola Kirke. Saadiq co-wrote “I Lied to You” with Göransson.

“In a modern time where people have a lot of outboard gear and different compressors, it doesn’t matter what you have, it’s really in the fingers,” Saadiq explained of writing the song. “It’s in the hands. It’s in the mind of the person that’s doing it. I was playing an acoustic guitar in Ludwig’s studio, and we jammed for a second. I wrote the lyrics on the spot right there, and recorded everything that night.”

In December, the Academy announced that “I Lied to You” had made the Oscars shortlist for Best Original Song. Another of the film’s tracks, “Last Time (I Seen the Sun),” is also on the list.

On Sunday, Sinners won the Audience Award at the Golden Globes. This year marked the category’s debut. Rolling Stone called it “a victory for the most daring of the nominated films (if not all of this year’s releases), Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, with its singular combination of vampires, the blues, and Black history, is enough to make the whole thing worth it. In his speech, Coogler thanked the audience ‘for showing up’ — making it clear he wasn’t sure if his gamble would pay off.”
