Watch Rosalía’s Theatrical Performance of ‘La Perla’ on ‘Fallon’

The Spanish musician’s highly-lauded new album, Lux, is out now

Rosalía appeared on The Tonight Show last night to perform her song “La Perla” and to discuss her new album, Lux, with host Jimmy Fallon.

The Spanish singer showcased the evocative track in a sumptuous white gown while lying on a pile of mattresses on the late-night show stage. As the camera pulled back, it was revealed that she was surrounded by musicians, including a strings section. In a reference to fairy tale The Princess and the Pea, Rosalía climbed down from the bed and revealed a pearly ball (hence the song’s title) from under the mattresses. Notably, the performance was subtitled in English for viewers.

The singer sat down with Fallon to chat about Lux, which features her singing in 13 different languages. It also includes classical influences, which she said is a new direction for her. “I always get nervous when I’m sharing it,” she said of her approach. “More than when I’m doing it. When I’m about to go to the studio I know how I want it to sound. I know how it’s going to be.”

Rosalía also showed Fallon how she created different rhythms on the album by clapping and taught him various vocal warm-ups she uses for her performances.

The singer later joined Fallon for a game of “Seductive, Insulting, or Nonsense.” The game involved Rosalía speaking to Fallon in Spanish while he attempted to guess the tone of her speech, including her seductively intoning “I think you have your toupée on backwards.”

Lux is out now, showcasing operatic inspirations, collaborations with the London Symphony Orchestra, and careful training Rosalia perfected through years of work. Rolling Stone lauded Lux as an instant classic, calling it “a truly timeless work of art” that “no other pop star could have made.”
