Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery — The Untold Story premieres on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ on Sept. 21

A star-studded new documentary titled Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery — The Untold Story will celebrate the trailblazing legacy of the historic all-female music festival. Ahead of the film’s Sept. 21 release, a new trailer previews interviews with artists who played the festival as well as young fans shaped by it.

“All of my favorite artists played at this event,” Olivia Rodrigo says during her interviews. “I was in disbelief I had never heard of it before.” Rodrigo is joined by Lilith Fair vets Sheryl Crow, Paula Cole, Bonnie Raitt, and Erykah Badu as well as the fest’s co-founder Sarah McLachlan, who all appear in the documentary. The new trailer previews some of their interviews as well as never-before-seen performance and backstage footage that celebrates the powerful, supportive environment and impact of a woman-led festival.

“Promoters said ‘You can’t put two women on the same bill. People won’t come,’” McLachlan recalls. “That’s complete bullshit.”

Ally Pankiw directed the film, which is produced by Dan Levy‘s Not a Real Production Company and commissioned by CBC. The film is produced with the support of the original Lilith Fair founders McLachlan, Terry McBride, Dan Fraser, and Marty Diamond. The film is based on the 2019 Vanity Fair article “Building a Mystery: An Oral History of Lilith Fair” written by Jessica Hopper with Sasha Geffen and Jenn Pelly.

It will premiere on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ in the U.S. and internationally on Sept. 21. The film will debut on CBC in Canada on Sept. 17 and CBC Gem on Sept. 21.
