Watch Slipknot go viral for ‘The Whitney Houston Challenge’

Slipknot are some of the latest names to get involved in ‘The Whitney Houston Challenge’, and found their contribution going viral.

The trend has been circling around the internet over the past few weeks thanks to it going viral on TikTok. In the challenge, people put their sense of rhythm to the test by trying to bang a drum at the exact same time as the drum hits before the last chorus of the classic ‘I Will Always Love You’.

Late drummer Ricky Lawson was behind the studio album recording of the drums, and the challenge is harder than it first seems. Since it became a trend, countless names have filmed themselves giving it a go, with the vast majority seemingly unable to nail the timing to the track.

Now, Slipknot have gotten involved in the action too, and shared a clip of the members each giving it a shot. Oddly enough, it was guitarist Mick Thompson who was the only member to get the hit exactly on the beat, and the band’s guitarist Eloy Casagrande actually came in far too early – leading to all the other members bursting into laughter.

Check out their viral attempt below.

Others to have gotten involved in the trend include Simple Plan, who shared a similar video to Slipknot – showing all the members gathering around to watch each other attempt to execute the beat with perfect timing.

Paula Abdul shared her own attempt too, taking to TikTok and sharing footage of her getting the timing spot-on and writing the caption: “It’s harder than it looks, okay??”.

As for other Slipknot news, the metal icons have yet to release any new material since 2022’s ‘The End So Far’, though they teased a new song ‘Long May You Die’, which was recorded shortly after Casagrande joined in early 2024.

Recently, the drummer revealed that the band are working on new music. “We are cooking, we are doing some new music, for sure,” he said.

While nothing further has been announced at time of writing, this month did see member Sid Wilson launch his own label, Vomit Face Records, and share its first single from Lil Bushwick, ‘Take It Back’.

Before then, September saw the band release a 25th anniversary reissue of their self-titled debut album, which included previously unheard demos, new artwork and unseen images from the band’s archives.

They’re also reportedly selling their music catalogue for $120million to HarbourView Equity Partners, a deal that will cover ownership rights to their publishing and master recording royalties, and the house in Iowa they and their fans destroyed in the video for ‘Duality’ is going up for auction.
