Weezer Go Back in Time for ‘C.E.O.’ Music Video

Weezer Go Back in Time for ‘C.E.O.’ Music Video

Weezer gathered a slew of guests stars for the raucous video for their new single “C.E.O.” The band, who will unveil their 20th studio LP Weezer on Aug. 21, enlisted Tony Hawk, Curry Barker, Dax Flame, Chit, Rob Riggle, Rob Huebel, Michael Peña, Giovanni Ribisi, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

The meta clip pays homage to their classic 1994 video for “Undone (The Sweater Song).” Huebel and Riggle play a pair of stereotypical CEOs watching Weezer shoot a music video in front of a gold backdrop, instead of the original blue. Frontman Rivers Cuomo complains about being stuck in the past, telling them, “We’ve done this before.” The band quits when the director releases a swarm of bees onto the set (the original clip featured dogs), only to be replaced by lookalikes.

“Cranking out another Nineties jam,” Cuomo intones on the track. “Wish I could do something new/ But nobody wants to hear that/ They just want the classics/ You can’t blame ’em, really/ There’s something special about your early shit.”

The musician recently explained the inspiration behind the track to Rolling Stone, saying, “I was bemoaning the fact that I’m finding myself in this role that doesn’t really work with being an artist. Everyone loved the song, but nobody liked that line. We ended up externalizing it — it’s like I’ve externalized this part of myself that’s bringing down the party.”

Weezer, dubbed The Gold Album, was co-produced by Geese collaborator Kenny Blume (f.k.a. Kenny Beats) and Klas Åhlund. The band has so far shared two tracks, “Shine Again” and “We Might as Well be Strangers.”

“Kenny brought this kind of educated-thug vibe,” bassist Scott Shriner told Rolling Stone. “He’s six-foot-seven, big solid dude, very physically intimidating — and I just appreciate that. This guy’s a real force, he’s got the knowledge to back it up, and he’s a massive Weezer fan. In his words, he wanted to make the most violent Weezer record ever.”

In addition to the new song, Weezer announced additional dates for their upcoming Weezer: The Gathering tour. The expansive tour kicks off Sept. 8 in Sacramento and continues around North America through late October. The band will then head to Japan in February 2027 and onward to Europe next May and June. The Shins and Silversun Pickups will open the North America dates, while Taking Back Sunday will open for the band overseas.

Tickets go on sale for the U.K. and Europe shows on Aug. 12 and the Japan tickets will be available from Sept. 5. Fans can join the Weezer Fan Club to access tickets early on Aug. 11.
