World Cup surge disrupts Official Singles Chart as Sam Fender breaks historic record

World Cup surge disrupts Official Singles Chart as Sam Fender breaks historic record

World Cup fever has firmly taken hold of the UK music scene as England’s progression to the semi-finals triggers a dramatic surge for tournament-related hits. Preliminary sales and early streaming reports from the Official Singles Chart First Look indicate that national football celebrations are heavily disrupting the top standings.

Leading the sporting resurgence is ANOTR’s ‘Talk To You’, which has vaulted twelve places to Number 2. The sudden momentum follows a viral clip of Three Lions defender John Stones mimicking an injury before breaking into a dance soundtracked by the song. Meanwhile, the official 2026 World Cup anthem ‘Dai Dai’ by Shakira and Burna Boy has climbed nine spots to Number 4.

Classic tournament staples are also returning to public consciousness. Oasis’s ‘Wonderwall’, heavily adopted by fans during the current campaign, is on track to re-enter the Top 10 at Number 8. Further down the provisional standings, Baddiel, Skinner and The Lightning Seeds’ iconic ‘Three Lions’ is targeting a return to the Top 20 at Number 16, while Shakira’s 2010 anthem ‘Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)’ is positioning itself for a Top 40 re-entry at Number 34.

Away from football, a historic milestone is being set at the summit. Sam Fender and Olivia Dean’s collaboration ‘Rein Me In’ is on course to secure a 17th consecutive week at Number 1. The achievement officially breaks the record for the longest-running British chart-topper, surpassing the long-standing milestone established by Bryan Adams with ‘(Everything I Do) I Do It For You’ in 1991.

The mid-week data also highlights rising club and electronic tracks, with Prospa and Cloonee’s ‘Free Your Mind’ climbing to Number 3. Additionally, British DJ Josh Baker is positioned to earn his debut Top 40 entry with ‘My Place’ featuring Poppy Baskcomb at Number 25.

The week’s updates are marked by a poignant resurgence for the late Bonnie Tyler, following her death on Thursday. Public tributes and a surge in retrospective streaming have pushed her signature 1983 power ballad ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ back into the main standings, with the track currently placed at Number 39.
