Xiu Xiu Cover Daniel Johnston, Glorilla, Robyn, and More on New Album

Xiu Xiu have announced a new covers album: Xiu Mutha Fuckin’ Xiu: Vol. 1 is out January 16 via Polyvinyl. Below, listen to Jamie Stewart, Angela Seo, and David Kendrick’s takes on the Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb” and Daniel Johnston’s “Some Things Last a Long Time.”

Elsewhere on Xiu Mutha Fuckin’ Xiu: Vol. 1, Xiu Xiu cover songs by Glorilla (“Lick or Sum”), Robyn (“Dancing on My Own”), Talking Heads (“Psycho Killer”), Roy Orbison (“In Dreams”), Throbbing Gristle (“Hamburger Lady”), Soft Cell (“Sex Dwarf”), and others.

Xiu Mutha Fuckin’ Xiu: Vol. 1 is Xiu Xiu’s third album of covers, following 2013’s Nina and 2016’s Plays the Music of Twin Peaks. “The enduring and basic through line with all of them is an attempt to say thank you to those songs,” Jamie Stewart said regarding the band’s approach to tribute records. “They are all in one way or another pieces of music that have moved us and exploring them in a deep way is a small honorific offering to the muse that created them. We never approach them thinking, ‘How can we improve these,’ but really, ‘What can we learn from these?’”

Xiu Xiu released their latest studio album, 13″ Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto With Bison Horn Grips, in 2024. They have been playing live shows that center on David Lynch’s Eraserhead, and they will continue to do so next year. See the tour dates below.
