The British rock band Yard Act has never had much interest in offering easy answers. The Leeds quartet built a reputation on sardonic observations about modern life, packaging political unease inside wiry post-punk. But on their third album, You’re Gonna Need A Little Music, they sound surprisingly liberated. It doesn’t abandon those wiry instincts so much as loosen its collar. It’s a lively, melodic record that finds the band trading some of their familiar bite for movement, groove, and the occasional open-road soundtrack.
The album’s biggest victories arrive from two different directions. On “New Beginnings” and the title track, Yard Act’s newfound musical range does the heavy lifting, proving that the band has grown as much instrumentally as it has conceptually. While it’s expected that James Smith, lead vocalist and lyricist, still has plenty to say, it’s surprising how often this album lets the music do the talking first. Producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen (best known for his work with artists such as Beck, Nine Inch Nails, M83, Air, St. Vincent, Wolf Alice, and Deafheaven) gives Yard Act a broader palette than before, allowing pianos to wander through songs that might once have been driven solely by angular guitars, while rhythms flirt with funk, dance-rock, and a sense of forward motion to shoulder as much weight as Smith’s cynical storytelling. It’s the first record the four members wrote together in the same room, allowing their instinctive chemistry to shine through and feel noticeably more spontaneous than its predecessors.
One of the album’s stronger pieces, “New Beginnings,” barrels forward with infectious confidence, anchored by muscular guitar work, driving drums, and a shout-along chorus. Everything locks together with effortless harmony. Smith’s repeated promise to “spend your winnings on new beginnings” isn’t his sharpest piece of writing, but it hardly matters when the band’s performance is this magnetic. It’s the kind of song that feels destined to become a live favorite because every element keeps pushing the next one forward.
The title track reaches that same destination through entirely different means; where “New Beginnings” surges, “You’re Gonna Need A Little Music” glides. Dreamy piano phrases weave around understated guitars and an unhurried rhythm section, creating the feeling of rolling down an open highway with nowhere particular to be. Even as the arrangement stays deceptively simple, subtle electronic textures keep the song in constant motion. Its refrain, reminding listeners that “you’re gonna need a little music,” plays with conviction instead of forced sentimentality.
“Thrill of the Chase” is arguably the strongest track on the album and the most complete marriage of concept and execution. The sharp lyrics and title are embodied in the music itself, most notably in the relentless rhythm section, which reflects the endless pursuit of conformity and ambition that Smith criticizes. Its pounding rhythm section practically begs to soundtrack a getaway scene, but beneath that velocity lies some of Smith’s strongest writing: “Wish I never opened my eyes to what’s in front of me/pay the piper, don’t follow me/call the sniper, brand new policy/anybody tryna get ahead of the colony gets a bullet in their head before they get an apology.”
While certain songs successfully couple lyrical and musical prowess to arrive at a stirring destination, not every track is quite as ambitious. “Fiction” leans too heavily on a repetitive hook that never quite develops into anything more revealing, while “Cherophobe Rock,” despite its muscular guitars, feels somewhat generic beside the rest of the album’s personality. Even “Redeemer,” despite flashes of vivid imagery and plenty of fire, is more intense than memorable. Although the songs themselves aren’t bad, they briefly flatten a record that’s otherwise eager to surprise.
Still, You’re Gonna Need A Little Music succeeds because it isn’t content to repeat what Yard Act has already mastered. Their cynicism is still there, but it’s carried by brighter melodies and a willingness to let the music speak as loudly as the message. They haven’t completely traded their cynicism for optimism; they’ve simply found brighter colors to paint with.
