“Yungblud would do a good job of playing me”: Brian Molko backs biopic casting

Placebo frontman Brian Molko has revealed his ideal casting for a potential cinematic biopic about the band, naming genre-bending rock star Yungblud as the perfect candidate to portray him on the big screen. The iconic singer-songwriter made the candid confession during an appearance on Radio X’s new digital series, Do I Wanna Know?, where he sat down with host John Kennedy to answer a series of burning questions submitted directly by the station’s listeners.

When Kennedy asked the frontman, “If you could choose anyone to play you in a Placebo biopic, who would that be and who you would you pick to direct it?”, Molko did not hesitate to put forward the chart-topping alternative artist. However, he lightheartedly identified one major vocal hurdle the Yorkshire-born musician might face during production, admitting: “I think Yungblud would do a good job of playing me, but I think he might struggle with my accent!”

In response, Kennedy offered reassurance that the energetic performer would welcome the opportunity, noting, “Yeah, I think he’d be up for the challenge though.” Molko then looked back on how his own personal thoughts on the hypothetical role have evolved since the band’s initial rise to alternative rock fame in the 1990s. Reflecting on his past preferences for his on-screen double, the singer added with a smile: “The answer to that question used to be Audrey Hepburn, when I got asked it.”

Turning his attention to his dream choice for the director’s chair, the musician selected a legendary figure of independent American cinema to steer the visual narrative. “One of my favourite filmmakers is Jim Jarmusch,” Molko shared, before revealing just how profoundly the director’s artistic vision has impacted his own life. “I have one of his films tattooed on my skin – Only Lovers Left Alive, my favourite film.”
