Paul Simon, Cher and Chaka Khan to receive Grammy Lifetime Achievement awards

Paul Simon, Cher and Chaka Khan are among the artists set to receive a Lifetime Achievement award at this year’s Grammys.

The Recording Academy have announced that Latin rock guitar legend Carlos Santana will also pick up the honour, while Whitney Houston and Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti will be posthumously recognised.

Lyricist Bernie Taupin, record executive Sylvia Rhone and Latin jazz musician Eddie Palmieri – who passed away in August – will also be honoured with the Trustees Award, while classical composer John Chowning will receive the Technical Grammy Award.

The awards will be presented at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles on January 31, the night before the main ceremony at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on February 1.

The Lifetime Achievement award is presented to performers who, during their lifetimes, have made “creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording”. It was first awarded to Bing Crosby in 1963, while recent recipients have included The Clash, Prince, N.W.A., Donna Summer and Nirvana.

Elsewhere, Kendrick Lamar leads the way with a total of nine nominations, thanks to his sixth studio album ‘GNX’, with Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter, Bad Bunny all up for all three of the ‘major’ categories – Album Of The Year, Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year. All of the nominations were announced last month – check them all out here.

Among the first-time nominees this time around are Addison Rae, Olivia Dean, KATSEYE, sombr, Lola Young and Alex Warren, who are all up for Best New Artist. Sleep Token are up for Best Rock Song and Best Metal Performance, while Yungblud, PinkPantheress, FLO, Tate McRae and Zara Larsson are also among those up for awards for the first time.

Among the notable snubs were Lorde, The Weeknd, Gracie Abrams and Benson Boone.

Paul Simon has announced his ‘A Quiet Celebration’ tour for the UK and Europe, to take place in April and May next year. The dates include two huge shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall – you can check out all the information here and find any remaining tickets here.

Cher, meanwhile, will be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live tonight (December 20), her first time filling that role for almost 40 years. Ariana Grande is hosting the episode.
