Lewis Capaldi has a phobia of sea life.

The 29-year-old has been battling his unusual and irrational fear of the ocean – which is known as thalassophobia – and everything living beneath the surface by going for a swim in the sea.

He’s quoted by the Daily Star newspaper as saying: “I hate any sort of sea life – I don’t think I’m offending any of them – I hate sea life in general.

“I’m just scared of them. Usually I wouldn’t even get in the sea, but I’m doing it.”

The Someone You Loved hitmaker started getting in the sea during his Australia tour in December.

However, he has since been told about Groupers, a giant fish which has been described as Labradors of the sea.

He quipped: “I’m really glad I didn’t know that at the time. I really hate fish…but I swam, I was in the drink.”

Meanwhile, Lewis revealed late last year he was planning to get into the studio in January to start working on his next record.

The Scottish singer/songwriter released four-track EP Survive in November, his first new music since 2023 album Broken By Desire to Be Heavenly Sent and his decision to take a lengthy break from music to deal with his mental health struggles and make his Tourette’s Syndrome more manageable following his tough 2023 Glastonbury performance

He made a triumphant return to Emily Eavis’ music extravaganza on Worthy Farm in Somerset, South West England, last summer but Lewis has admitted the songs have not been flowing freely the past several months – although he was planning to make a start on a batch of new songs earlier this year.

Appearing on Australian radio show Carrie and Tommy, he said: “I haven’t written a song since March of this year, I haven’t picked up a guitar, or written anything new. I was finding myself in a bit of a creative rut.

“In January, well next month, I’ve got some studio time booked in and that’ll be the first time I’ll have got back to making stuff.”

Describing his songwriting process, he added: “It depends. Sometimes I have songs which are melodies that I record into my phone. Other times I’ll have lyrics sitting around on my hone for ages.

“It depends, sometimes it’s music and melody, sometimes it’s a lyric or something hanging around.”
