In a career-spanning track-by-track interview for the new album Your Favourite Toy, Foo Fighters sat down with John Kennedy for a special edition of X-Posure on Radio X. Frontman Dave Grohl offered a candid look into the chaotic creative process behind the band’s 12th studio effort, revealing that the record almost carried a very different name.

The album’s title track was nearly the namesake for the entire project, but a Hollywood blockbuster forced a last-minute change. “Actually, you know what I wanted to call the record? I wanted to call the record For Good,” Grohl told Kennedy. He explained that the lyric in “Your Favourite Toy” says, “someone threw away your favourite toy for good,” and he felt it was a “nice” title with multiple meanings. However, the plan was ditched when the Wicked film adaptation was announced. “Then that Wicked movie came out, and it’s called Wicked: For Good. And I was so p*****! So, then I changed the title of the song, and then it just became the title of the album.”

Despite their status as global icons, Grohl insists the band’s internal dynamic hasn’t changed since their early days. “The way we function as a band… we still function like a band that plays in a f****** garage,” he admitted. Addressing the perception of their success, he added, “I maybe people would imagine that we’re a lot more professional than we actually are.”

This “unprofessional” approach extends to their recording style. Grohl described the layering of their three-guitar attack as a mystery: “It’s kind of like this stew where you’re just adding ingredients and you’re crossing your fingers and hoping it’s edible. And when it works, it really works.”

One of the most striking moments of the interview came when Grohl discussed his legendary scream. Guitarist Pat Smear noted there is “no warm-up,” and Grohl confessed he has “honestly no idea” how his voice holds up. “There have been times where I’m screaming so hard I literally imagine my throat popping like a balloon. That kind of freaks me out.”
