Sam Smith Says Met Gala 2026 Look Was the ‘Heaviest Thing I’ve Ever Worn’: Here’s How Much It Weighed

Sam Smith‘s whimsical Met Gala look weighed an almost unholy amount, with the singer-songwriter revealing on the red carpet Monday (May 4) just how heavy it was.

Speaking to Emma Chamberlain for Vogue alongside partner Christian Cowan — who designed Smith’s ensemble — the Grammy winner exclaimed before entering the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City that their black, sparkly robe and matching feather headpiece was “the heaviest thing I’ve ever worn in my life.”

“It’s a massive workout,” Smith continued. “It’s making me alert. It’s like a corset on the shoulders.”

It was Cowan who revealed the exact weight of the “Stay With Me” artist’s getup: 52 pounds.

When taking an up-close look at the multi-textured outfit, it makes sense why it would be so heavy. As revealed on Cowan’s Instagram, the sparkles on Smith’s jacket required 255,000 individual crystals and beads and 2,000 hours of hand sewing.

“This look is a love letter to the king of fashion illustration, and to my love, Sam,” wrote Cowan, who’s been in a relationship with the vocalist since around 2023.

Smith was one of dozens of stunningly dressed celebrities in attendance at this year’s gala, which was cochaired by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour. The theme was “Costume Art” with a dress code of “Fashion Is Art,” which everyone from Bad Bunny to Sabrina Carpenter, Madonna, the members of BLACKPINK and more put their own spins on for yet another memorable first Monday in May.
