Paul McCartney reflects on a lifetime of music in BBC Radio 2 special

The airwaves are set to capture a rare moment of music history as Sir Paul McCartney joins Vernon Kay for a special edition of Tracks of My Years. Announced today during Vernon’s mid-morning show, the legendary singer-songwriter has recorded a deep-dive conversation into the ten songs that have soundtracked his extraordinary life. The full interview is scheduled to air on Bank Holiday Monday, May 25, 2026, offering fans an intimate look at the influences behind a career that has shaped global culture.

Vernon Kay, who hosts the UK’s most popular radio show, described the recording session as “extra special,” admitting to being momentarily entranced by the presence of the former Beatle. The wide-ranging interview explores McCartney’s childhood in Liverpool and his earliest musical memories, providing a narrative thread through his time with The Beatles, his solo ventures, and his prolific songwriting legacy. Listeners can expect candid stories involving McCartney’s contemporaries, including The Rolling Stones and The Kinks, alongside personal recollections of meetings with icons such as Elvis Presley, Brian Wilson, and Bob Dylan.

McCartney’s ten chosen tracks reveal a diverse musical palette. His selection ranges from the foundational rock and roll of Gene Vincent’s “Be-bop-a-Lula” and Buddy Holly’s “That’ll Be The Day” to 80s synth-pop from The Human League. Most poignantly, the list concludes with John Lennon’s “Imagine,” a tribute to his late bandmate and friend. The broadcast arrives just days before the release of McCartney’s highly anticipated new album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, which arrives on May 29 as his first studio project in over five years.

Following the Bank Holiday premiere at 6:00 PM on Radio 2 and BBC Sounds, daily episodes will be featured during Vernon’s morning show from May 26 to May 29. For those looking for a visual experience, the exclusive interview will also be available to watch on BBC iPlayer. As McCartney prepares to launch a new creative chapter, this retrospective serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring magic that began in a small house in Liverpool nearly seven decades ago.
