Charli XCX announces new album ‘Music, Fashion, Film’

Charli XCX has announced her new album ‘Music, Fashion, Film’, and it features Martin Scorsese on the cover.

The announcement was made on the singer’s social media channels earlier today (Monday June 1), where she confirmed that the new album would be released on July 24 and also unveiled the artwork. Pre-order it here.

Set to be her seventh record, ‘Music, Fashion, Film’ follows on from her hit 2024 album ‘Brat’ – which sparked ‘Brat Summer’ – and the soundtrack album she wrote for the latest Wuthering Heights film adaptation.

The black and white cover is shot by Aidan Zamiri, and sees John Cale, Marc Jacobs, and Scorsese standing together, each representing the three aspects of the album title.

“My new album ‘Music, Fashion, Film’ is out July 24th. 11 songs, 30 minutes, five seconds. available to pre order now, love you,” Charli wrote in the caption.

So far, two songs have been shared from the forthcoming album, the gritty, guitar led lead single ‘Rock Music’, and the edgy ‘SS26’ which dropped two weeks ago.

The title of the new album is taken from the lyrics to the latter, in which Charli sings: “We’re walkin’ on a runway that goes straight to hell / Nothing’s gonna save us, not music, fashion or film.”

As well as the two singles, the ‘Von Dutch’ singer has also released two B-sides, the pensive ‘I Keep On Thinking Bout You Every Single Day And Night’ that accompanied the lead single, and the punk-tinged ‘Playboy Bunny’ that arrived shortly after ‘SS26’.

In April, Charli’s team confirmed that she was finishing work on her new album, and shortly afterwards the artist told British Vogue some of the lyrics to ‘Rock Music’ – prompting speculation that the album would take a heavier direction. Charli later clarified that she “never said” she was making a rock album.

Before then, the singer made it clear that she was wanting to distance herself from the sound of ‘Brat’, and later added that she found it interesting to see the polarised reaction to the lead single.

“It’s all kind of fascinating. I love talking about music and art with my friends, so I’m happy people are throwing out thoughts,” she said. “I’m not gonna explain where I was coming from with ‘Rock Music’, but all I know is that things can be funny, earnest, sincere, and joyful all at the same time and that’s what I feel about a lot of the things I make.”

She doubled down on those comments in a new TikTok video too, telling her fans that the album is going to be “really different” from ‘Brat’, and she’s fine with fans potentially not liking it.

“I love it! And you might not, and that’s cool,” she said “If you do [love it] that’s cute, but if you don’t, that’s totally OK because that’s just what it is to have personal preferences.”

As well as the Wuthering Heights soundtrack, Charli has also spent the time since ‘Brat’ working on music for the A24 film Mother Mary, starring in her own mockumentary The Moment, and taking on a role in the new romance Erupcja.

Other acting roles have included a role in fantasy 100 Nights Of Hero, playing a comedic version of herself in Overcompensating, and being cast alongside Supergirl star Milly Alcock in a new horror film.

She will return to the stage to make her headline debut at Reading & Leeds in August, topping the festival bill alongside Fontaines D.C., Raye, Florence + The Machine, Dave and Chase & Status. Visit here for tickets.
