Buddy Guy announces lavish 90th birthday bash

Buddy Guy has announced he’ll throw himself a star-studded 90th birthday concert.

The legendary blues singer plans to stage a huge concert at New York’s Radio City Music Hall to celebrate his upcoming 90th birthday – accompanied by a star-studded roster of high-profile singers and musicians.

“Can’t wait to celebrate 90 years of living, loving, and playing the blues with all my friends,” Buddy, who turns 90 on 30 July, said in a statement as he launched the news of his Buddy’s Got The Blues concert, slated for 1 October.

“We’ll make it a night not just for me, but for the folks who taught us, the friends we’ve played with, and the ones coming up behind us.”

A heavily stacked line-up on the night will include Eric Clapton, John Mayer, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, Jon Batiste, Aloe Blacc, Joe Bonamassa, Gary Clark Jr., Shemekia Copeland, Robert Cray, Samantha Fish, Eric Gales, Billy F. Gibbons, Ivan Neville, Robert Randolph, Bobby Rush, Isaiah Sharkey, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jimmie Vaughan, Ally Venable, Willie Weeks, and Kim Wilson, with further artists and guest performers still to be announced.

Last year, Buddy declared himself the last man standing of his generation of blues musicians.

“I’m the last old man still walking and playing the blues,” he told Rolling Stone.

“That’s what we talked about with Muddy (Waters) and Howlin’ Wolf before they died. They said, ‘Buddy, please keep the blues alive.’ And I’m tryin’.”
