Elton John celebrated 36 years of sobriety on Wednesday.
The Rocketman singer celebrated the latest milestone in his sobriety journey by posting a photo of himself holding a glass of his Elton John Zero Blanc de Blancs, his alcohol-free sparkling wine alternative, with a big smile on his face.
In the snap, which is accompanied by his 1983 track I’m Still Standing, Elton appears to be enjoying a meal outdoors as a bottle of his 0.0.% wine sits in an ice bucket.
“36 years sober today,” he wrote in the caption. “Raising a 0% glass to life. Grateful for every single day.”
The 79-year-old received support from his celebrity friends in the comments, with DJ Diplo writing, “Happy birthday our king,” Scissor Sisters star Jake Shears posting, “Love You Elton!!!!!” and actress Nicola Peltz sharing love heart emojis.
Elton and his husband David Furnish launched Elton John Zero in January this year.
“Elton John Zero was born from a simple yet exquisite idea – to create a world where every moment of celebration can be shared by all,” the music star wrote on the brand’s website. “Our 0% alcohol Blanc de Blancs captures the elegance, effervescence, and joy of a traditional Blanc de Blancs, without compromise. Crafted with care and intention, it embodies the art of inclusion – inviting everyone to raise a glass, savour the sparkle, and share in the timeless celebration of togetherness.”
The Your Song hitmaker has been very open about his addiction to drugs and alcohol between the late 1970s and the late 1980s. He has been sober since 1990.
While he has retired from touring, Elton will perform two shows at the Banorte Stadium in Mexico City, Mexico on 2 and 3 October.
