The musical – based on the 1984 film – features music by Prince, including classics ‘When Doves Cry’, ‘I Would Die 4 U’, ‘Take Me with You’ and ‘Purple Rain’, and will play Broadway’s Majestic Theatre from March 12, 2027.
Opening night is scheduled for April 12, and you can sign up for early access to tickets here. The musical had its world premiere at the State Theater in Minneapolis last year, featuring a book by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and direction by Lileana Cruz.
With it set to come to Broadway, the creative team has been revamped, with Saheem Ali (Buena Vista Social Club) directing the musical with a book by Peter Duchan (Dogfight). Choreographer Ebony Williams will be returning, while casting for its Broadway turn will be announced at a later date.

“I am honoured to join the ‘Purple Rain’ family and help carry this story forward. Our aim is not only to honour the legacy that Prince built, but to make his timeless music feel urgent and alive, passing it on to the next generation of fans who will make it their own,” Ali said, per The Hollywood Reporter.
“Prince gave us the blueprint for this story, and our job has been to make sure his voice and music lead the show and to celebrate his remarkable legacy,” said Duchan. “It’s a privilege to help bring this story to the stage, and we’re all excited to share it with fans of the film and the album around the world.
Bobby Z and Morris Hayes, who both worked with Prince for years as bandmates and musical collaborators, are music advisers on the production, with Orin Wolf lead-producing.
The musical follows the plot of the Purple Rain film, which starred Prince as a young performer known as “The Kid”. Prince wrote the songs for the film, and won an Academy Award for Best Original Score.
In other Prince news, it was announced back in June that an album of rare and unreleased tracks from the late musician’s vault would be released, led by the new single ‘Stone’.
‘Timeless’ will be made up of 10 songs from across the iconic musician’s four-decade career, all carefully curated by the Prince estate and never before released. The record will be released on August 28 via Legacy Recordings and you can pre-order/pre-save it here.
Released in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of Prince’s death from an accidental fentanyl overdose at the age of 57, it includes recordings created between 1977 and 2016, and it includes ‘With This Tear’, the song shared in April on the exact anniversary of his passing.
