Speaking to LBC’s Ben Kentish, Malone addressed recent figures showing a six percent drop in students taking music A-levels, describing the decline as a direct threat to both the country’s heritage and its creative economy.
Malone highlighted the commercial significance of the UK music sector, noting that it contributes approximately £8 billion annually to the economy, employs 270,000 professionals, and establishes Britain as the world’s second-largest music exporter. He emphasized that these achievements rely on early educational pathways, including GCSE and A-level qualifications, which foster future professional artists and educators.
Addressing the growing divide between state and independent education, Malone raised concerns that formal music education is increasingly becoming accessible only to families attending private schools or those able to fund private instrumental tuition. He referenced singer-songwriter Sam Fender’s rise from a working-class background as an example of talent that risks being overlooked if state school provision continues to contract.
Beyond economic metrics, Malone pointed to the personal benefits of music education, explaining that learning an instrument builds confidence, mental well-being, and broader life opportunities for young people across all social backgrounds.
Malone warned that without systematic support and equal access to arts education in state schools, future generations of young people will no longer view music as a viable career or creative outlet, threatening Britain’s long-term standing in the global music industry.
