Billie Eilish delays James Cameron-directed concert film: “Worth the wait”

Billie Eilish‘s new Hit Me Hard And Soft concert film by James Cameron has been pushed back by almost two months.

The pop star announced the ambitious project last November, confirming that it would be released on Friday March 20.

“This has been one of my favourite tours everrrrrr and being able to capture it and co-direct this film with @jamescameronofficial has truly been a dream come true,” she wrote at the time. “Can’t wait for you all to see it.”

Hit Me Hard And Soft: The Tour (Live In 3D) was shot at Eilish’s four-night sold-out run at Manchester’s Co-Op Live in July 2025.

Yesterday (Monday January 26), Oscar-winning filmmaker Cameron took to social media to share an update on the upcoming movie. He confirmed that the release date had been delayed by seven weeks, citing technical reasons.

“We’re refining the cut; dialling in cool, new 3D tech; adding some special behind-the-scenes we know you’ll love,” wrote the Avatar and Titanic director/producer.

“HIT ME HARD AND SOFT: THE TOUR (LIVE IN 3D) will now release Friday, May 8th.” Cameron then teased that the film would be “worth the wait”.

He also attached a photograph of himself working on the movie in an editing suite. The image shows a wide shot of Eilish performing on stage, with a big screen above here. Check out the post here:

The official trailer for Hit Me Hard And Soft: The Tour (Live In 3D) arrived last month. In the clip, Cameron said: “No one’s shot a concert film on this scale before. We’re using tech that’s never been used before.”

Eilish spoke about the film at one of her Manchester dates last summer, telling the crowd: “So you may have noticed that there are more cameras than usual in here” (via The Hollywood Reporter).

“Basically, I can’t say much about it, but what I can say is that I’m working on something very, very special with somebody named James Cameron, and it’s going to be in 3D. So, take that as you will.”

She added: “And these four shows here in Manchester, you and me, are part of a thing that I am making with him. He’s in this audience somewhere, just saying.

“So don’t mind that, and also I’ll probably be wearing this exact outfit for like four days in a row.”

In October, Eilish told WSJ Magazine: “I’m really excited for all of it, and I’m so excited for the fans to experience this 3D situation that we’re working on. It’s nothing I’ve ever done, and I haven’t seen anything really like it, and I’m just kind of blown away at every step of the process.

“[Cameron] spends the entire show [framing the show] in front of all of the screens, and he just never quits. He never yawns, and he’s so respectful of what I want.”

Elsewhere, Cameron told ET that the film was “just so much fun” to make. “I mean, [Eilish] is such a wonderful artist, she’s so talented, and she and I are directing that together, so we will be in the cutting room together,” he said.

“I figured she created the show; she was the architect of one of the most amazing live shows I have ever seen. She earned her director props already.”

NME reviewed the tour at The O2 in London, giving it a full five stars and hailing the run as “another sublime stint from an eternal star”.

“It’s the perfect example of how Eilish has grown in the last three years and since the start of her career – always an artist who’s been able to write killer songs, but one who consistently finds a way to level up and tap deeper into universal emotions,” it added.

Eilish was touring in support of her third and most recent studio album, 2024’s ‘Hit Me Hard And Soft’. She released her previous concert film, Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter To Los Angeles, in 2021.

In other news, Billie Eilish has urged her “fellow celebrities” to “speak up” against ICE’s actions in Minnesota. Her brother and collaborator Finneas has also called out conservatives’ hypocritical gun law arguments in their attempts to justify the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti.
