Foo Fighters Changed the Name of Their New Album To Avoid Conflict With ‘Wicked: For Good’

Foo Fighters Changed the Name of Their New Album To Avoid Conflict With ‘Wicked: For Good’

Foo Fighters new album, Your Favorite Toy, almost had a completely different title. The album, released in April, was initially named after the title track, which was originally dubbed “For Good.”

“I wanted to call the record For Good, because that song, ‘Your Favorite Toy,’ at first I called it ‘For Good,’” Dave Grohl told Radio X’s John Kennedy in a new interview. “In that song, ‘Your Favorite Toy,’ it says, ‘Get back, hear that boy/ Someone threw away your favorite toy for good.’ I was like, ‘Oh that’s a good title, not only for the song but for the album.’ It could have more than a few meanings.”

The title took on a different meaning when blockbuster sequel Wicked: For Good was released last year. “I was so pissed,” Grohl said. “So then I changed the title of the song and then it just became the title of the album.”

Wicked: For Good arrived in theaters in November. It was the second half of Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the Broadway musical, following 2024’s Wicked, and starred Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Chu explained to Variety why they decided to change the title from Wicked: Part Two to reflect the musical’s penultimate musical number.

“Who wants a movie called Wicked: Part Two?” the filmmaker said. “On the script, it always said, ‘For Good,’ and so it was just a point of like, ‘Do we really want to call this “Part Two”?’ And nobody wants that. … I mean, that’s the destination. ‘For Good,’ we know, is like, ‘Where are we going with this movie? Let’s finish this thing.’”

Foo Fighters released Your Favorite Toy, their 12th studio LP, last month. The group announced the album in February by sharing the title track. “‘Your Favorite Toy’ really was the key that unlocked the tone and energetic direction of the new album,” Grohl said in a statement. “We stumbled upon it after experimenting with different sounds and dynamics for over a year, and the day it took shape I knew that we had to follow its lead. It was the fuse to the powder keg of songs we wound up recording for this record. It feels new.”

Foo Fighters will perform at the Welcome to Rockville festival in Daytona Beach, Florida, on May 8. They’ll also play Bottlerock Napa Valley on May 23 before embarking on a run of European dates. The Foos will return to North America for an Aug. 4 gig at Toronto’s Rogers Stadium with gigs running through late September.
