Jessica Simpson addresses alcohol issues as she debuts song

Jessica Simpson has described herself as a “work in progress” as she discussed her battle with alcoholism.

The 45-year-old singer appeared on stage at the Yaamava Resort & Casino in California on Monday evening, during which she debuted her unreleased song Give It All Away, which was co-written by Linda Perry.

Ahead of the performance, Simpson explained how her recovery from addiction had inspired the lyrics.

“I realised that the drinking wasn’t numbing my pain, it was actually causing more pain,” Jessica told the crowd, via a video released by The Hollywood Reporter.

“In all honesty, I’m just a work in progress, and I celebrate each and every day that I feel alive and in my body, and I’m very proud of myself,” she added.

The Dukes of Hazzard star, who has been open about her sobriety journey, continued to address her past health struggles.

As she urged her fans to be kind to themselves, she also offered hope to those who may be battling similar issues with addiction.

“It felt right to share this song with you and I want all of you to know that you should have a little grace for yourself and everything is gonna be okay if you just give it all away, and that’s what this song is about,” the star shared.

Jessica took to social media to celebrate eight years of sobriety in November last year.

At the time, she revealed how tackling her alcoholism had transformed her life and allowed her to develop a newfound inner strength.

“Alcohol silenced my intuition, blocked my dreams and chased my circulating fears of complacency. Today I am clear. Today I am driven by faith,” she wrote on Instagram.

The star previously recalled realising she had reached rock bottom when she was unable to help her three children get dressed for Halloween in 2017.

“It was 7.30 in the morning and I’d already had a drink,” she wrote in her 2020 memoir Open Book.
