Lizzo Celebrates Her ‘Independence From the Bullshit’ on Feminist Single ‘Bitch’

The singer dedicated the song to women “who get called a bitch for having boundaries, for being sexual, for speaking up for themselves, for working hard and owning businesses”

Lizzo dropped a new single, “Bitch.” The song is the title track off of her upcoming album, Bitch, out June 5. It was produced by Ricky Reed, Blake Slatkin, and Zack Sekoff, and interpolates Meredith Brooks’ 1997 song of the same name.

The singer also shared a black and white music video for the track, directed by Child. It showcases Lizzo and her entourage as circus performers as Lizzo declares her freedom: “She’s a bitch/ Uh you mean boss/ You been through what I been through/ You know the cost/ If I lost some followers it ain’t a loss.”

“This song is dedicated to the women who get called a bitch for having boundaries, for being sexual, for speaking up for themselves, for working hard and owning businesses,” Lizzo wrote on social media. “If we don’t smile and perform all the time we’re ‘ungrateful.’ If we run a strict program we’re ‘mean.’ If we enjoy sex we’re ‘sluts’ and shamed.”

She added, “This WOMANIFESTO is a declaration of independence from the bullsh*t. It’s a B!TCH summer.”

Lizzo announced Bitch, her third studio album, last week. In a statement, she said of the album’s title, “Reclaiming the word Bitch is power — it’s taking a label once used to diminish women and turning it into a declaration of confidence, and unapologetic self-love. So many incredible women in music have used the word for positivity like Meredith Brooks and Missy Elliot. It was only fitting to name my album Bitch because it has become my favorite word when using it on my own terms and because I am 100% that bitch!”

Bitch marks Lizzo’s first proper solo album in four years, following 2022’s Special, as well as her 2025 mixtape, My Face Hurts from Smiling.
