Lorde calls out Spotify over AI-generated song descriptions: ‘We don’t want this’

Lorde has slammed Spotify executives for introducing AI-generated song descriptions on the music streaming service.

Taking to her Instagram Stories on Thursday, the What Was That hitmaker criticised the new “About the Song” feature on the platform, which remains in development but can be seen by a limited number of users.

Lorde underlined her point by uploading a screenshot of her 2025 song Current Affairs on Spotify.

In the accompanying caption for the track, AI has seemingly pulled a paragraph from themusic.com.au in which the writer describes the singer-songwriter as having turned the song into a “full-on performance piece, stripping down to underwear while a dancer pours water over her stomach so the song plays out like the shower scene she talks about on stage”.

In her own message, Lorde – real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor – asserted that the AI-generated description was incorrect and unnecessary.

“I’m going to go out on a limb and say we don’t want this,” the 29-year-old wrote. “Not only is this inaccurate (not the song I did that in) but reducing a song to an AI-generated meaning right at the source feels like it limits free interpretation imo (in my opinion). At least make it possible for artists to opt out please.”

Responding to Lorde’s feedback, a Spotify spokesperson confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the AI-generated text had been removed.

“About the Song is a beta feature that presents cited information from third-party sources,” they added. “We’re continuing to improve it based on feedback from artists and fans.”

Lorde released her fourth studio album, Virgin, last year. The New Zealand-born artist is currently on the Ultrasound World Tour, with her next concert set to take place in the Czech Republic on Saturday.
