Oasis make history as Morning Glory named biggest UK studio album of all time

Oasis have made British music history as (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? has been crowned the UK’s Official biggest studio album of all time. The achievement comes as the Official Albums Chart celebrates its 70th anniversary today, 22 July 2026, marking seven decades as the definitive measure of the nation’s listening habits since its launch in 1956.

The Manchester legends’ seminal 1995 release places at Number 3 on the all-time ranking, standing as the highest-charting studio record in UK history behind only two compilation albums. Racking up a colossal 6.2 million UK chart units to date, the album enjoyed a massive surge in popularity following the band’s historic 2025 reunion. Oasis also secured a second entry on the all-time list, with their 1994 debut Definitely Maybe landing at Number 39.

Taking the overall top spot on the chart is Queen’s 1981 compilation Greatest Hits, which leads the total countdown with a monumental 7.8 million chart units. Swedish pop icons ABBA follow closely at Number 2 with Gold – Greatest Hits, having achieved 7.1 million units. Adele’s 2011 record 21 sits at Number 4 on 5.7 million units, making it the biggest album of the 21st century and placing her as the highest-ranked female artist in UK history. The Beatles round out the top five with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band at 5.6 million units.

British acts account for half of the all-time Top 10, with Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon and Dire Straits’ Brothers in Arms joining Oasis, Adele, and The Beatles in the upper ranks. Elsewhere, Ed Sheeran makes a strong showing across the full Top 70 list with three separate entries, led by 2017’s ÷ (Divide) at Number 13. Official Charts interim Co-Managing Directors Becca Monahan and Chris Austin commended Oasis on the milestone, noting that three decades after its release, Morning Glory remains a defining British record that continues to unite generations.
