Skindred secure historic first Number 1 album with ‘You Got This’

Skindred secure historic first Number 1 album with ‘You Got This’

In a definitive triumph for the British metal community, Newport’s own Skindred have secured their first-ever Official Number 1 album with You Got This. The achievement follows a nail-biting chart battle against pop icon Jessie Ware, whose sixth studio album, Superbloom, pushed the band neck-and-neck until the final hours of the tracking week.

The victory is particularly sweet for the trio—comprising Benji Webbe, Mikey Demus, and Arya Goggin—after their 2023 release, Smile, narrowly missed the top spot by a mere 150 units. This time, the band left nothing to chance, also topping the Official Vinyl Albums Chart. Speaking exclusively to Official Charts, the band described the win as a “fairytale of Newport.”

Frontman Benji Webbe revealed the album’s title was inspired by a transformative moment at a gym spin class, where he witnessed a personal trainer encouraging a stroke survivor. “I heard them say these three magical words: ‘You Got This,'” Webbe recalled. “It’s a positive message to everyone going through a tough time or suffering with their mental health. To be the first Welsh Ragga Metal Punk band from Newport to hit Number 1 really is a special moment.”

While Skindred take the throne, Jessie Ware’s Superbloom finishes at a valiant Number 2, marking her highest-charting career peak to date and securing the top spot on the Official Record Store Chart. Elsewhere in the standings, Olivia Dean continues her record-breaking run as The Art of Loving celebrates its 30th consecutive week in the Top 5, currently sitting at Number 3.

ZAYN secures his third Top 10 entry with his fifth studio album, KONNAKOL, debuting at Number 4, while Michael Jackson’s The Essential collection surges to Number 5 following the cinematic release of the Michael biopic. The “Coachella effect” also continues to bolster Justin Bieber’s catalog, with SWAG leaping 20 spots to Number 17. Finally, ABBA’s Gold: Greatest Hits reaches a staggering milestone, celebrating its 1250th week inside the Top 100.
