Swishahouse Founder Michael ‘5000’ Watts Dead at 52

Swishahouse founder Michael “5000” Watts is dead at 52 years old. Watts’ family confirmed the Houston rap pioneer’s passing in a statement on Friday (Jan. 30).

“It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that we inform the public of our beloved Michael ‘5000’ Watts. On Jan. 30, 2026, Watts transitioned surrounded by loved ones,” the statement from his family reads. “We truly appreciate the love shown to Michael throughout his career, and we ask for continued prayers as we navigate through this very hard journey.”

The mixtape legend developed a “fatal heart rhythm called torsades de Pointes,” which caused Watts to suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. He is survived by his wife Tammie Watts, five children and two grandchildren.

“His legacy and career started at the age of 14 and he continued his success as a business owner, DJ, radio personality, founder and owner of Swishahouse and pillar in the community,” the statement continues.

A plethora of hip-hop figures paid tribute to Watts, including Juicy J, Slim Thug, DJ Paul, Drumma Boy and Maxo Kream.

Watts founded Swishahouse in 1997 and brought the syrupy chopped-and-screwed style from Houston to the masses. The DJ and superproducer played an integral role in launching the careers of stars like Paul Wall, Slim Thug, Mike Jones and Chamillionaire. Swishahouse went on to become a powerhouse label in hip-hop in the 2000s.

“Michael “5000” Watts was more than a founder, he was a movement,” Swishahouse Records co-founder OG Ron C said in a statement, per ABC13. “As the creator of Swishahouse Records, he helped define the sound, spirit, and global influence of Houston hip-hop. From the streets of Houston to international stages, Watts expanded on Houston’s chopped and screwed legacy, transforming mixtape culture into a worldwide phenomenon and giving a platform to voices that would go on to shape an era.”

OG Ron C added: “Through Swishahouse, Michael Watts introduced and elevated countless artists, DJs, and producers, building a brand that stood for authenticity, independence, and cultural pride. Swishahouse became synonymous with innovation, hustle, and community, producing legendary mixtapes, shaping radio culture, and influencing generations of artists across hip-hop and beyond. His work helped put Houston on the global music map and cemented the city’s place as a cornerstone of American music history.”

The Watts family and Swishahouse revealed that Michael “5000” Watts had been hospitalized due to serious health complications earlier this week (Jan. 28), and sought prayers from fans.

In more recent years, Watts hosted a night slot on Houston’s 97.9 The Box radio station where he played a Swishahouse mix.

A community event honoring Watts’ enduring legacy is set to be announced in the coming days. Billboard has reached out to Swishahouse for comment.
