The Maccabees ‘aim’ to make new album

The Maccabees ‘aim’ to make new album

The Maccabees are working on new music with “the aim” of making a full album.

The Pelican hitmakers – who split in 2017 before reuniting last year for their first gigs in eight years – haven’t released a record since 2015’s Marks to Prove It and admitted trying out new material during their current outdoor concert series has been a “big jump” but there will be other songs on the way soon.

Speaking to Radio X, frontman Orlando Weeks said about a potential new album: “Well, in that we’re playing new stuff… it’s a big jump for us.

“We hadn’t played together for eight years, and then last summer we weren’t ready to do any of that. We didn’t have any songs, and now we have some songs. We have one that we’re really confident [in] and we’re enjoy playing.

The singer noted the group have other songs they have “been working on whilst we’ve been away”, and will “keep working on” them at the end of the tour.

He added: “That’s the aim, is to try and do it. Make it good enough, and then it’ll happen, you know.”

Guitarist Hugo White teased adding new songs to this year’s setlist had given the group “a hint of the future”.

He added: “There is more to it, you know.”

In May, Orlando admitted it isn’t easy for the group to get into the recording studio together.

He told NME: “I would say we’re slightly further on than just talking about it, but we’re not a long way on.

“I live in Lisbon, so it’s harder for me to just get in a room, but I think the fact that we’re doing these shows is a good opportunity to put a fire under us. We’ll see.”

And guitarist Felix White insisted the group would never just make music for the sake of it.

He said: “I think The Maccabees is never going to be a thing where you go, ‘Oh, we got another record, another record, another record…’ because, for better or worse, everyone cares too much about it.

“If we can get together and really feel all the stuff when you’re playing a song together – even if you’re in a bad mood, you can’t help but smile really big and have all the clichés like hairs on the back of your neck [standing up]… if we can find that secret again, then that will be a really amazing thing.”
