White House slammed for using Bad Bunny song in new ICE deportation video

The White House has come under fire for using a Bad Bunny track in promotional videos for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

A video posted Thursday (July 30) to the White House’s TikTok account features Bad Bunny’s ‘DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS’ track ‘La Mudanza’. The song plays out over spliced up footage of ICE detaining undocumented men and women, and features the lyric: “Un aplauso para mami y papi porque en verdad rompieron”, (“A round of applause for mom and dad, because they really crushed it”).

Text over top of the clip read: “A round of applause for Donald J. Trump because he really crushed it,” and was captioned: “We’re making America great again.”

Many fans taken issue with their use of the track, given Bad Bunny has been an outspoken critic of ICE. Last year, when he was confirmed to be playing the Super Bowl halftime show, he came under personal attack from the MAGA movement, and Trump called the decision to have him headline “crazy”, claiming that he had “never heard” of him.

One of the President’s advisors then confirmed that ICE would be present at the performance – which carried added poignancy as Bad Bunny previously announced that he would not be touring the US due to fears over ICE agents raiding the concerts.

A poll after the show found that more Americans believed Bad Bunny “better represents” the country than Trump, while the president hit out at Bad Bunny again, writing on Truth Social that the halftime show felt like a “slap in the face” for America.

Last month, Ariana Grande criticised the White House after her song ‘Bye’ was used in a video showing ICE agents detaining people, telling the administration not to associate her music with the “barbaric, inhumane” footage.

Kesha also hit out after ‘Blow’ was used in a military video, while Boards Of Canada and Warp Records condemned the unauthorised use of ‘Deep Time’ in a post featuring border patrol boats and detention centres.

Sabrina Carpenter previously described an ICE video featuring ‘Juno’ as “evil and disgusting”, while Olivia Rodrigo accused the administration of using her music to promote “racist, hateful propaganda”.

Other artists and estates to have objected to Trump using their work include The Rolling Stones, Adele, Neil Young, Jack White, ABBA, Céline Dion, Foo Fighters, Isaac Hayes’ estate and Eddie Grant.
