Travis Scott arrived on ‘The Odyssey’ set every day at 5am so he could shadow Christopher Nolan and learn how to use a camera

Travis Scott has talked about his experiences making The Odyssey, revealing that he would wake up at 5am to shadow director Christopher Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema.

The musician made a small appearance in the blockbuster as Phemius, a bard. Nolan has previously said that he “cast him because I wanted to nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap,” saying elsewhere that “His voice became the final piece of a yearlong puzzle.”

In a new interview with Variety, Scott recalled his time on set, recalling that he arrived at 5am so that he could study Nolan’s process as a filmmaker. “I’m looking in the camera. I’m all under the hood,” Scott said, before joking: “Ain’t no kicking it.” He also shared what he learned from the Oscar winner. “Always see the vision through,” he explained. “Never go short on the vision.”

The eagerness to be involved was shared by the entire cast. “Nobody was in their trailer,” he said. “That was new for me; I was used to doing what I’m doing and going back to the trailer. But I was really wanting to learn, so I didn’t really want to be in the trailer anyway.”

The Odyssey has been met with almost-universal acclaim, achieving the biggest opening of the year for a live-action film and the highest Rotten Tomatoes scores of Nolan’s career, both from critics (94 per cent) and audiences (97 per cent).

Recently, the director said that the elements of horror used in The Odyssey has given him an appetite to make an all-out horror movie in the future. Elsewhere, Greek cinema audiences were interviewed about their thoughts on the film, with the opening night cinemagoers giving a positive reaction.
