The group took a hiatus in 2023 after releasing their album Screen Violence

On Friday night Chvrches performed together for the first time in nearly three years and took the opportunity to showcase a new song, “Conman.” The group appeared as part of Robert Smith’s Teenage Cancer Trust’s Royal Albert Hall concert series, which also featured Garbage, My Bloody Valentine, and Elbow.

“I promise I’m not just inside watching telly all the time, we have been making a record,” singer Lauren Mayberry told the audience. “And we thought, since this is a special night, we would play something off that record for you guys. So be kind to us, we’ve never played this in front of human beings before.”

Chvrches’ last album, Screen Violence, arrived in 2021. Last summer the group confirmed they have been working on new music, although they haven’t shared any details about a potential release date.

In 2023, Mayberry announced that she was stepping away from the band to embark on her own solo career. She released a solo LP, Vicious Creature, in December 2024 and toured in support of the album in 2025.

“There would be lyrics or concepts that I had come up with over the last couple of years and then thought that I couldn’t do in a Chvrches song,” she told NME about deciding to pursue her own style. “These are things that I just need to say from my point of view. Obviously I’m the narrator in Chvrches, but you’re still speaking on behalf of a group.”
