Foo Fighters: “Every record has been our last record”

Foo Fighters: “Every record has been our last record”

Foo Fighters have discussed their upcoming album and revealed that every record has felt like it could be their “last”.

The comments come after the band announced their 12th full-length effort ‘Your Favorite Toy’ last week (February 19), and shared its massive title track.

Frontman Dave Grohl then spoke to Zane Lowe for Apple Music 1 about what fans could expect, saying it was stacked with “noisy, loud bangers” that feel like they’re from “the old days”.

Now, he has looked back at the band’s long history together, and admitted that even he sometimes feels surprised by how long they’ve kept the group going.

Speaking to BBC Radio 6 Music’s Huw Stephens, Grohl was reminded that The Beatles came to an end after their 12th album, ‘Let It Be’, and went on to explain that he isn’t sure about when Foos will release their final record.

“Every record has been our last record. So, I kind of feel like at this point you just kind of—you make a record and you go, ‘OK, well, let’s do it again and let’s see what happens.’”

The comments align with what the musician told Zane Lowe last week, when he shared that he found it “really complicated” to continue with the band after the unexpected death of Taylor Hawkins in 2022.

“We had Taylor Hawkins as our drummer for 25 years and, beyond being an amazing drummer, he was this incredible spirit. He was this incredible human being and he was our brother. He was our best friend,” the singer explained. “So, continuing after Taylor was really complicated, not just for us, but for any drummer that was going to come in to like, you know, fill his shoes.”

The year after Hawkins’ death, Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle, Nine Inch Nails) stepped in as touring drummer and continued to perform with the band until his abrupt departure in May 2025.

Since then, Ilan Rubin has taken on the role of sticksman – with him and Freese swapping groups; Rubin left Nine Inch Nails to join Foos, and Freese returned to work with Trent Reznor.

Foos’ new record will arrive on April 24, and marks the follow-up to 2023’s ‘But Here We Are’. It will feature last year’s ‘Asking For A Friend’, and comes after Grohl had confirmed that a new record was finished in January, with the Foos subsequently sharing some teasers online.

Dave Grohl and co. will head out on the road in the UK and Europe this year for a run of huge stadium shows, and are set to play some North American dates over the summer and autumn. They’ve announced an Australia and New Zealand leg, too, for 2026 and 2027. Find any remaining tickets here.

Since announcing the new record, the band have played their new single ‘Your Favorite Toy’ for the first time on The Graham Norton Show, with Jake Shears on backing vocals. They have also announced a series of surprise shows taking place across London, Dublin and Manchester this week.
