In the late 2000s, Duffy was a global phenomenon. Her multi-platinum debut album, Rockferry, and the hit single “Mercy” dominated charts worldwide. However, at the peak of her fame, she vanished. It wasn’t until 2020 that she revealed the devastating reason: she had been drugged, kidnapped, and subjected to violent abuse.
“Fifteen years ago, Duffy was one of the most famous singers in the world,” said Sean Doyle, Vice President, Unscripted, Disney+. “And then she disappeared. This film will give Duffy the chance to tell her story in her own words. Above all, I’m especially in awe of Duffy—for her honesty and courage to share her story.”
The documentary, directed by Northern Ireland’s Gill Callan, traverses Duffy’s life from her upbringing in Wales through to her withdrawal from the public eye. It features unprecedented access to the artist, alongside archival footage and interviews with those closest to her.
“Duffy’s life has been shaped by success and fame, but equally by pain, defiance, and an irrepressible sense of self,” Callan noted. “I’m drawn to the tension between vulnerability and confidence in her story and how a person can… still find a powerful, expressive voice that is unmistakably hers.”
Commissioned as part of a development fund with Northern Ireland Screen, the project is being handled with extreme sensitivity by Rare TV and Stellify Media. By reclaiming her narrative, Duffy moves past the headlines to offer a retrospective on a life defined by both incredible talent and unfathomable resilience.
