‘Original Draft’ version of Mark Lanegan’s classic ‘Bubblegum’ to be released for Record Store Day 2026

The ‘Original Draft’ version of Mark Lanegan‘s classic ‘Bubblegum’ will be released for Record Store Day 2026.

The former Screaming Trees vocalist released his sixth solo album in 2004 to critical acclaim for its stark blend of blues, rock and punk.

Following on from his stint as a full time member in Queens Of The Stone Age, Lanegan worked with a star-studded lineup of close collaborators including PJ Harvey, Josh Homme, Duff McKagan, Greg Dulli and more. With these musicians, Lanegan produced enough material for two albums, which was eventually refined into the 2004 release.

Now, the original running order and recordings for ‘Bubblegum’ will be available on limited-edition 2XLP white vinyl for Record Store Day this year (April 18).

It will restore the record to Lanegan’s original intentions, providing an alternative lens on one of Lanegan’s seminal records. The album was mixed by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road. Profits will go towards the recently established Mark Lanegan Foundation. Take a look at the tracklisting below, along with other big name Record Store Day releases this year:

Mark Lanegan’s ‘Bubblegum (Original Draft)’ vinyl edition tracklist is:

A
‘When Your Number Isn’t Up’
‘Hit The City (feat. PJ Harvey)’
‘Mirrored’
‘Methamphetamine Blues’

B
‘One Hundred Days’
‘Bombed’
‘Like Little Willie John’
‘Strange Religion’

C
‘Josephine (outtake)’
‘Come To Me’
‘Message to Mine’
‘Wedding Dress’

D
‘Lexington Slow Down’
‘Skeletal History’
‘Blood (Crackers & Honey) (outtake)’

Lanegan died aged 57 in 2022, with NME hailing him as a “foundation stone in modern alternative rock”.

A tribute concert to Lanegan was held in 2024, with Josh Homme, Depeche Mode‘s Dave Gahan, Primal Scream‘s Bobby Gillespie, Chrissie Hynde and many more performing on the night.

Entitled ‘Mark Lanegan 60 – A Celebration’, it honoured what would have been his 60th birthday and was hosted at London’s Roundhouse.

Gahan spoke to NME on the night about Lanegan’s passing, remarking: “It’s time; you start thinking about time. I knew that Mark was struggling with his health and was trying to take care of that in various ways. I think everything just caught up with him. You get to a certain age where you find yourself asking, ‘Why does this hurt? Why can’t I do that?’ You don’t feel older in my mind, but you feel it.

“To me, losing Mark was the same as when Bowie went,” he continued. “You know: tick-tock, we’re not invincible, we’re not here forever, you’ve just got to enjoy the time you have. Give a little more time to your family and friends and be grateful for what you have. Mark struggled for years with his demons – as we all do, some of us more than others – but his songwriting and in particular his voice have been my companion for years.”

Elsewhere, Record Store Day will see a slate of one-off releases in support of charity partner War Child in addition to releases from Charli XCX, Muse, Suede, David Bowie, The Cure, KPop Demon Hunters, Paramore and many more. Check out the full list here.
