Violet Grohl: How Dave Grohl’s hidden ‘sex phone line’ shirt inspired new music

Appearing on The Evening Show with Dan O’Connell on Radio X, singer-songwriter Violet Grohl gave fans a hilarious look behind the curtain of her creative process. The rising star revealed that her gritty new track, “595,” was actually born from a clash with her father, Dave Grohl, over a piece of vintage merchandise.

“This is kind of incredible”

Violet explained that the song’s title and lyrics were inspired by a “sex phone line ad” t-shirt she purchased on Etsy. However, her famous father wasn’t exactly thrilled when it arrived. “My dad actually opened up my package and saw the shirt, and then hid it in his studio for a couple months!” she told Radio X. After a house-wide search, she eventually “found it in a box in his studio.” When she finally got into the studio to work on a “heavy, kind of desert, rocky” sound, the shirt became the muse. “It says, like, ‘$5.95 per call,’ and there were so many little lines on the shirt that were just so perfect. We were like, ‘This is kind of incredible. We should write a song about this!’”

“It just kind of happened that way”

The interview also cleared up Dave Grohl’s recent claims that Violet kept her record deal a secret until a surprise dinner announcement. Violet insisted “it wasn’t intentionally kept a secret,” explaining that they were both simply “busy at the same time off doing things.” She recalled going to her parents’ house for dinner and casually dropping the news: “I signed a record deal.” As she put it, “That was that week’s endeavour.”

Perhaps most exciting for fans is the news that her debut album, ‘Be Sweet To Me’, is already finished. “We recorded all of the music together in late 2024,” she revealed, admitting she has been “sitting on it for quite a while.” The record’s sound was forged through six-hour sessions of listening to a “reference playlist,” with Soundgarden’s “Fourth of July” serving as a major touchstone. The album promises a rich sonic palette, drawing from “Cocteau Twins, Goldfrapp, Soundgarden, and the Breeders.”
